Heathsiders pick up 19 PBs in Ipswich

27 Heathsiders, 19 PBs in Ipswich Southerns

An impressive batch of 27 Heathside athletes took part in the Southern Athletics League event in Ipswich and between them they picked up 19PBs and scores of SBs. There were so many commendable performances that it’s hard to pick out one for especial mention. There were splendid showings from Emmanuel Nwaobodo (who managed a PB of 11.1 in winning the 100m – one of eight events he entered). Lily Beckford, still under 17, won the women’s 400m by 0.7 secs in 58.4 seconds and picked up a PB of 25.8 in the women’s 200m.

Beckford 8th in UK

David Spencer reports: "Lily Beckford ran a superb 400 p/b at Watford last week . I know because I ran in the same race and saw her majestically disappear into the distance." Spencer, a V60, was pretty nifty himself, covering the distance in 65.44. He also ran the 400 in the Rosenheim League, in Ewell on June 5 - in 64.90.

Alston wastes no time in San Francisco

Shortly after relocating with a flower in her hair, Fiona Alston entered the San Francisco Marathon, cruising in at a time of 3:28.38 (438th out of 5,763; the 37th woman out of 1,896 and the fourth 30-34 woman out of 406). She reports: It was just an assault of hills...one after another- even a whopper at 21 miles. It was just totally menta!"

Madams and Monaghan in Battersea

Dan Madams and Steve Monaghan both went through the motions in the Sri Chinmoy 10k at Battersea Park, early on Saturday morning. Dan came 7th in a respectable 35.02 and Steve 12th in 35.53.

Miller qualifies for ITU World Champ age group teamOur very own Ruth Miller qualified for the GB Age Group team for the Olympic distance ITU World Champs in Hyde Park in September (let's go support!). Deva Triathlon in scenic Chester, on June 2nd, was the first of the qualifying races, so the standard was high and competition was extremely fierce (and the river swim COLD!). All 30 women in Ruth's age group were trying to qualify and she had to get in the top 5 to secure her place in the team, which she just managed after a strong run over cross-country terrain and only passing 6th place with a 1Km to go.

Dave wasn't trying to qualify, just trying to beat Ruth. Which he just managed by 1 minute (but he lost his chip, so did she actually bike faster? We'll never know!)

Half Iron woman Bolla in Cairns, Australia

In only her third triathlon Jas Bolla stepped up to the 70.3 (half Ironman) and travelled halfway across the world to Cairns, Australia, to finish in a promising 6:15.05. “I’m really pleased, even though my swim was bad,” she said after it was all over. “There’s always next time when I want to get under six hours, and I’m definitely up for some Olympic distance races.”

Potter and Gold shine in Ashford

Martin Potter and the ever-improving Howard Gold both put in exceptional performances in the Brent Ashford Olympic Triathlon. Potter came 11th out of 101 and was the first V45-50 in an eye-catching time of 2:18 that included a 24.59 swim. Gold picked up yet another PB and was 18th overall, and the second V40-45 in a time of 2:20.52. He actually managed to better Potter on the bike and the run (officially, anyway, but he says the timing was a bit cockeyed). If he can improve on his swim (a respectable 29.10), he’ll have no trouble breaking the 2:20 barrier.

Waldman makes welcome return in Hackney

Good to see Louise Waldman back in action, after what seems like years of injuries and operations, and she was in fine form in the Hackney Splash Aquathlon (750m swim, 5km run), coming 12th overall (4th woman) out of 59 in a time of 39.13. Also impressive was Jane Higgins’s 24th place in 43.24.

Park Runs

Twenty of our runners took part in Park Runs on Saturday and several did well. The result that stood out was Elspeth Storrar’s 4th place (2nd woman)  in a PB time of 19.51 in Pegwell Bay.
