Midsummer Madness
When this weekend started out looking suspiciously quiet I should have known it wasn’t because club members were hanging their running shoes up.......... On the contrary, as I discovered, it was because they were running even more, and even further away than usual..... on ever more exotic and challenging adventures. The main event locally was our own Hampstead Midsummer 10k on Sunday – with 42 Heathsiders participating, and more helping out - we also had two runners coming first in two Parkruns. But further afield Heathsiders were also to be found amongst other places in the Cotswolds (a hilly 12 miler), on a three day corporate challenge on Dartmoor, in Estonia and Tromso (marathons), and last weekend in New York (5K) and in Berlin (triathlon).
Hampstead Midsummer 10kOur own Hampstead Midsummer 10K on Sunday 23rd June was a roaring success, despite the Race Organiser - Briony - sadly having to miss the actual day. Forty-two Heathsiders turned out to run, and many more did a superb job of working behind the scenes or enthusiastically marshalling - many thanks to all those who turned out to make this such an enjoyable and professional event. The weather was perfect, with the rain kindly holding off until the race and prize-giving were over, and the watermelon at the end was extremely popular, as were the new technical t-shirts. Dan Madams was the first Heathsider in, coming in 7th man and 7th place overall in a superb time of 35.44, hot on his heels was Miron Woldmichael coming in 8th place in a great time of 36.00 and Steve Monaghan in 9th place in 36.07 (2nd MV40). Good times were had by many, of particular note Cathy Jeremiah who continues to chip away at her times, coming in second woman with a great PB of 42.37. Miranda Yau was first FV35 and Caroline White first FV55. Heathside also won both the men and the womens team prizes – the Men’s team prize won by Dan,Miron and Steve, and the Women’s team prize won by Cathy, Miranda and Caroline. Midnight Sun Marathon, Tromso, Norway 22/06/13Robert O'Grady has just sent through information on having completed a monster challenge - where he cycled 1265 miles in 11.5 days from Stavanger in Southern Norway to Tromso in the Arctic Circle. After a beer and pizza fuelled 48 hour taper in Tromso he then ran the Midnight Sun Marathon. Despite some very weary legs he managed to just sneak in under 3 hours, which he was very happy with. On searching the results I discovered Ryan McCrickerd, who modestly hadn't mentioned his feat this weekend, also took part, finishing in a very respectable 4.15 hours.
'H'ilmington 12-mile Hill Race, 23/06/13Dan McKeown ran the inaugural 'H'ilmington 12, and, as he said: thus named because it's based around the Cotswold village of Ilmington and it's a wee bit... undulating.I was second, bagging myself £15 and outrageous nettle rash on pretty much everything bar my face.
UK 3 day Challenge, Dartmoor 20 - 23 June 2013Dave Hellard, not content quite yet to take up his pipe and slippers, after his Sierre Leone marathon challenge came to an end, took up the UK 3 day Corporate Challenge held this weekend on Dartmoor - "80 companies, 54 hours, 6 missions, biking, running, canoeing, strategising, one life changing challenge" .... His team came second overall out of 50, 1st in the mixed category and 1st in the mountain biking stage.
Berlin Ironman triathlon 70.3 17/06/13Too late for last weeks results, on 17th June Simon Hazel took part in his second 70.3 Ironman triathlon of the season, ahead of his full distance attempt next month in Zurich, and had what sounds like an amazing race, coming 200th, although he was disappointed with his swim time, he got PBs in the cycle and for the overall time. In his words: On a much changed course from the one I originally signed up for the day started with a disappointing swim time of 37:32 for the 1.9k in the River Spree. After a Leisurely T1 I then took to my TT bike and cranked out a PB 2 hrs 40 mins for the 87k around the blustery old Tempelhof airfield. I arrived at T2 with faint hopes of cracking the 5 hour barrier and was on course after the 1st of the 3 lap run. However, the sun came out, the temperature rose and my pace dropped off a touch. I did finish in 5:05:51, which was a best ever 70.3 performance for me. I also came 27th in the 45-49 age group and 200th overall, again, both best results. However, still not quick enough for an invite to the World Champs in Las Vegas.
Finland Center Midsummer 5K, Brookly, New York 16/06/2013Another late result in from last weekend - Alex Galloway modestly announced that he won the Finland Center Midsummer 5k in Prospect Park, Brooklyn last Sunday in a great time of 17:45.
Rosenheim LeagueDave Spencer had a good run in the Rosenheim League in Twickenham on 19th June, achieving a pb in the 100 metres of 14.4, and running 200 metres in 29.0
ParkrunsTwo first places in different Parkruns on Saturday - Roger Braybrooks came first and got a PB with a winning time of 16.47 at Hackney Marshes, and Liam Proudlock was first in at Ally Pally in a time of 19.12. The full results of all Parkrun runners has not been sent to me this week, not sure why, so apologies if you have been left off the list below, which you will have been if you were doing a parkrun outside northish London.
Pärnu Victory Day Marathon, Pärnumaa, Estonia Jun 22, 2013Rebecca Bunting had a great run in Parnu in Estonia in a fantastic time of 3 hours and 18 minutes , a massive PB for her of 12 minutes knocked off her only other marathon time set in London earlier this year, and even more remarkable given the 25 degree temperature on Saturday. She was 2nd lady (and 9th overall).
