Track and field, and 5Ks all over the world

There was a hatful of track and field results this week, with Heathsiders popping up at the South of England Championships and the London Inter-Club Challenge. In this latter, Eugene scored PBs in the 100 and 200, with Henry landing a PB of 1.70 in the high jump. We had a huge turnout in the LICC (do we pronounce it 'lick'?) and no doubt there's plenty more to come over the summer months.

Three Heathsiders took part in the 'Last Friday' 5K in Hyde Park and Rob Shulman scored an excellent PB of 18:12, once again being chased over the line by Sarah Swinhoe (18:13). Andy Owen (19:12) completed our trio of raiders. Meanwhile, this stunning news arrived from Claire S in Newfoundland: "I have a race result as of this afternoon! Deer Lake 1st Annual Canada Day 5k (Newfoundland) 25.19.  4th lady and 8th overall (out of a field of *ahem* 21...)"  Claire didn't mention whether she'd be going back to have another crack at the course next year.

Not to be outdone, Cathy J was third woman home in the Melbourne parkrun,10,500 miles from Finsbury Park, smashing Whitley Bay for this week's 'Most Exotic parkrun' prize and setting the bar pretty high for future efforts. She will, however, be gnashing her teeth when she finds out I was having her on about the cash prize for MEP. Closer to home (but still not all that close) Tony K came 25th in 37:52 at a pretty warm and sunny Southampton 10k on Sunday.

In other notable parkrun news, Rebecca was first lady at Ally Pally in 20:50, while Laura was first at Beckton. Alex W ran 17:53 at the Dulwich Runners 5K, which will no doubt delight his burgeoning legion of online fans.

On the multi-event front, Gabi squeaked in ahead of Jo in the VOTWO Eton Dorney tri, gaining the upper hand in transition one, before scorching off on her bike to secure a winning lead. Maybe don't D-lock your bike next time, Jo? (Actually, I imagine she probably didn't.) Regardless, we'll all be looking forward to the next instalment of this exciting rivalry.

On this day in history

Ageing, grizzled, grey-haired Adrian Essex (his words) came second in the British Masters outdoor pentathlon at Horspath near Oxford on 23rd June. A substantial personal best of 26.77m in the javelin (the previous PB was apparently depressingly poor) boosted his points total to not quite 3,000. A canny run into a strong headwind in the 200 led to first place in the race and, with with just the 1500m to go, there was no chance of catching the event leader, but a 90 point-cushion over third place man was enough for Adrian, who limited his losses to 14 seconds to claim second place by 2792 to 2767.

With the Tour de France setting off this weekend, cycling fans around the globe could have been forgiven for overlooking the Bedford Cycletta - but Team Heathside didn't, with three of our ladies making it round the 57K 'challenge' course. Challenging indeed, although I can't imagine it was anything like as farcical as le Tour has been thus far.
