Outstanding Second place for Rob at Reading Ultra, plus PBs and more at LICC, Hasty Hare and British Masters
Heathsiders are returning to racing with great enthusiasm and success demonstrated by Rob’s ultra, and the various 10Ks, 5ks and track and field events held through the week!
Round Reading Ultramarathon 50k, Reading, 31.07.21
Rob Shulman had an astounding run last Saturday where he came 2nd overall and 1st v50 out of 233 finishers in the Round Reading Ultramarathon 50k on 31st July, in a time of 3.55, 40 seconds behind the winner. He wrote this small and modest summary: “This was a well organised race, 80% trail where competitors had to carry a pack with mandatory kit. It was a staggered start and I was one of the final starters, so it was impossible to know how I was doing overall, just that I was passing a lot of competitors. It was mainly well signposted but I took 3 wrong turns which were quickly corrected. The course was pretty flat and consisted of Thames path, canal path, forest, farmland and major roads. This was a fast course and I managed to run evenly, even managing a negative split, going through half way in 1.59. “

London Interclub challenge, Meeting 3, StoneX Stadium, Hendon 31.07.31
Simon sent in this report: “A number of Heathsiders took part in the LICC meeting in rather challenging conditions at the StoneX Stadium on Saturday. The sunshine soon changed to torrential rain showers not the most conducive to good performances. However, despite the conditions two new Junior Club Records were set by Jerome Henry in the Hammer and newly crowned Middlesex Champion Edward Metcalf in the Javelin. Jerome broke the previous record set in 2009 by Leon Cameron-Wilson by 10.76m and Edward Bill Steel's record. Mary also added to her Veteran records in the Hammer. In addition there were a host of PB's set on the track.”

Hasty Hare 5k, Battersea Park, Monday August 2 2021
Gavin sent in this report from the Hasty Hare 5K which took place last Monday evening in Battersea Park: “Beth Hawling, a second claim Heathsider, was the first woman in the Hasty Hare 5k in a PB time of 16:57 (identical to her time in Heathside’s Finsbury Park 5000s last month). Beth, running for Cheltenham & County Harriers, was four seconds ahead of the second runner from Marshall Milton Keynes.
The race was run in near-perfect conditions, prompting several of our lot to put in PBs. The first Heathsider home was Like Parker in a PB time 16:51, followed by Beth, then Nick Trower in a PB16:51 and Gavin Evans in 18:26 (the 1st V60 and set a new club age group record).
Lily Woolcock was the first Heathside woman running in club colours - in a road race PB time of 18:46 (she’s run 20 seconds faster on the track). Phil Hogg was next in 19:35. Jennifer Wing was the third Heathside woman in 20:44. She was followed by Joel Hawes in 21:51, and two more V60s, Alun Nash (22:45) and 68-year-old Carl Heap (23:08).”
