Imani Quamina sprints for England

Heathside’s two outstanding performances of the week came from U15 sprint and hurdles star Imani Quamina, who qualified to compete in the England U15/U17 championships in Manchester at the weekend. Imani, who is the London 75m hurdles schools’ champion in her age group, ran this event only three-quarters of an hour after running in the 200. Her time of 12.21 gave her fifth place in her heat. In the 200 she came sixth in her heat in a nifty 27.67.

Other exceptional U15 performances came from our athletes in the 800m in the Watford Open, where Mia Rosen ran finished in 2:22 and David Baah Okyere in 2:11.

Among the seniors Filippo Minelle broke his PB by more than five seconds in a time of 17:14 while William Griffiths closed in 17:06. And at the BMC Regional in Gillingham Brogan Wallace broke her PB with a time of 2:16 in the 800. She also broke her 1500 PB (by 10.5 seconds) in the Watford Open with a time of 4:36 while Lily Woolcock ran a PB of 4:43.

England U15/U17 Track and Field Championships, Manchester, August 7-8

Simon Baker sent this report:

‘Heathside’s Imani Quamina represented the club at the England National U15 and U17 Championships in a wet and windy Manchester at the weekend.   Even qualifying for these championships is an achievement and this was Imani's first experience of a major meeting and competing against the top ranked athletes in the country.

‘Imani who is London 75mH Schools Champion has had a fine season under the watchful eye of her coach Israel improving her 200m PB by 2s and her wind assisted PB in the 75mH of 11.61 is the 14th fastest in the UK this year.

‘Imani started in the 200m Heats finishing a creditable 6th in the difficult conditions and having been drawn in lane 1.  The Hurdle Heats were only 45 minutes later which saw her miss out on progressing to the next round by the slimmest margins of 1/100th second.

‘Despite the disappointment this was a great experience for Imani and an honour to see the club's colours at the highest level.  No doubt this was the first of many championships for her.’
