Part 2 - Sunday league cross-country, Oxford half marathon, Centurion 100 and Ridgeway Run
Part 2 of this week’s round-up includes results from the Sunday league cross-country, the Ridgway Run, Centurion 100 and half marathons on Oxford and Manchester.
Sunday league cross-country – Hoddesdon, 13.10.24
Eleven Heathsiders ran in the first race in the super-friendly Sunday league cross-country race. The course was a new one in Hoddesdon, involving three and a half laps of a grassy area, with a gradual slope as well as a short sharp hill. All ran well, with Chris Greenwood first in for the men, despite having run in Claybury on the day before whilst Katie Belkin was the first Heathside woman. Huge thanks are due to team captains Laura Boothman and Michael Hickey for leading the team and their enthusiastic support, and to Laura for supplying cake, fruit and pink Kit Kats after the race 😊 The next race is in Royston on the 27th October.

Ridgeway Trail Race (15K), 13th October, 2024
Caroline sent in the following report from the Ridgeway Trail race:
Four Heathsiders ran the hilly Ridgeway Trail Race (15K), near Tring. The weather was kind and although it was a chilly day the sun shone and it was a glorious day, and everyone enjoyed the race. Unfortunately there was a glitch on Bob Gould's number, (he had managed to get a transferred place from someone else) and sadly he wasn't listed in the results, and Lyn was registered as Male so although she was first FV70, this also wasn't listed officially in the results (at least to date).
156th Caroline White 1.24.58 (3rd FV60)
348th Andy Conway 1.40.40
406th Lyn Evans 1.45.33 (1st FV70)
Dominic Jones sent in the following report from the Centurion 100:
I ran the Centurion Autumn 100 this weekend - a 100 mile ultramarathon consisting of 4 x 25 mile 'out and backs' on the Thames Path and Ridgeway trails, starting and ending in the village of Goring.
On the first leg, conditions by the river were wet underfoot with long sections of mud and parts of the trail completely underwater, which made going slightly slower than anticipated. The joy (or horror) of the Autumn 100 from a racing perspective is that you can see the leaders come back past you after each turnaround point, and so get a sense of where you are in the field. I estimated about 15 people ahead of me, a few of whom I passed on the return back to Goring.
The next leg takes you up onto the Ridgeway via Grim's Ditch, with stretches of windy undulating single-track making up for about half of the 1500m elevation of the course. I was pleased at the turnaround to find myself in 5th, and not far back from the leader.
At the start of leg 3 I was looking forward to breaking the back of the last real climb of the course back up onto the Ridgeway. I was into 3rd place at this point, and enjoyed putting on some music and clipping off miles as the sun set, and then the meditative calm of running in the dark with just my own little bubble of headlamp.
I met my pacer, Daniel, in Goring at the start of the final leg and he told me that 2nd place had left 10 mins earlier. I wondered whether I might have enough left in the tank to close the gap, and resolved to set off sensibly but with purpose.
About 5 miles later I saw the headlight of 2nd place in the distance, and after overtaking, I resolved to put in a surge and create a gap. After 3km of pushing at what felt like an unsustainable pace to open a lead, I gradually sensed his headtorch dropping back.
At the final major aid station, I was told the gap to 1st place was around 25 mins - a stretch too far! I kept my effort honest over the home stretch to finish in 2nd place (1st V40) in 15:43, a great day's running and a big breakthrough at a familiar distance.
The winners were Brady Poskin in 15:20 and Hannah Rickman in 16:46.
2 Dominic Jones 15:43.41 (1st V40)
