Men 5th in Southern XC Relays
A very mixed range of results this week with XC Relays, Road races and Minithon action. Highlights include our Senior Men’s 5th place in the Southern XC Relays and Rebecca Piggott finishing 1st women in the Abingdon Marathon.
Southern XC Relays, Wormwood Scrubs 19.10.24
The morning rain failed to dampen the Heathsiders takingb part in the relays on a soft but flat course on Wormwood Scrubs. The Highlight being the Senior Mens A side’s 3 way battle for 3rd place finally falling alittle short finishing 5th but less than 2s from 3rd place.

Abingdon Marathon, Oxford, October 20
Gavin Evans reports:-
Rebecca Piggott was the women’s gold medallist in the Abingdon Marathon, beating the second place runner (the V55 super-star Karima Harris) by more than two minutes. Rebecca’s time of 2:48:55 was well off her PB but the combination of gusty winds, off-road mud, rain, tight spots where you had to queue and truncated training through illness meant that PBs were extremely unlikely.
The second Heathsider was Rob Shulman who ran his fastest time for several years, finishing in 2:56:18, which made him the fourth V50 despite being on the wrong end of that age bracket.
Next came Tony Shearer in 3:02:45. For Tony and Rob, this was a qualifier for the June 2025 Comrades Marathon in South Africa.
I was the fourth Heathsider to start but only made it halfway, which means I will have to find another qualifying marathon. My hamstring-induced problems seemed to be caused by the fake Nike Alphaflys I wore for the first time in this race. They tore when I laced them up and turned out to be double the weight of the genuine article and to have no carbon bit. My hamstrings hurt from the start. I did the first five miles in sub-3 pace but by the fifth they were hurting badly and after 13 I was worried my hamstrings would tear so dropped out.
Here is a review of the company that sent the fake shoes: https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.17track.net?fbclid=IwY2xjawGDDphleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHV9UTdYTCcCsr50rVod8imlwnY0y4X9fK3gZDFT0gzy9LIi9sGA6gclZTA_aem_5qDeuZFVZlJpJPUJTLI1Bg
