PBs and prizes at Battersea park

This week’s highlights include another club record for Adam Kirk-Smith and numerous successes at the Battersea Park 5k, the latest race in the club championship. This saw a stunning win by Olivier le Polain and over half of the 30 Heathsiders achieving PBs of up to 96 seconds.

Track

Adam Kirk-Smith again had a great week, breaking the club steeplechase record.  On Saturday he ran as a guest in the British Athletics League Premiership match at Allianz Park, where he beat all the league runners to win the race in 9:02.73.

Battersea Sri Chimnoy 5K

The highlight of the week was the Battersea Park 5K on Monday evening, a popular new race in the club championship calendar, with thirty Heathsiders participating.   It has a unique character, with prizes for the top 10 (rather than just the top 3) in the U50 category and awarding fruits (e.g. oranges, mangos, cantaloupes and bananas) instead of medals.  The race saw many outstanding performances, with over half of the Heathsiders achieving PBs.

First in was Olivier le Polain, winning with a stunning run by three seconds and securing a 22s PB and a cantaloupe for his efforts.  He was followed soon after by Richard Macaulay (16:11) and Andy Barnes (16:20), both with PBs.  Kimon Doulis had a remarkable run (16:37), knocking 48 seconds off his PB, as did Joseph Mckeown (17:40,  PB by 40s).  Rebecca Piggott was the first Heathside women, coming in 3rd in 17:35 (31 second PB), followed by Lily Woolcock (20:37) and Jessica Vinluan (21:21), who, despite recovering from jetlag, knocked off 14 seconds from her PB.  Caroline White was second in the V50 category and was rewarded with an orange.

Congratulation for the biggest PB goes to Jake Spencer (18:01), who knocked off 96 seconds from his previous time, closely followed by Liam Hazleton (19:26, PB by 72s) and Richard Peachment (20:45, PB of  50s).  Nick Dodd also ran well, achieving his 4th PB (by 14s) in in two months. Mike Abrahams had a good run (SB. 20:26), coming in 2nd V60, as did Carl Heap (20:33, 3rd V60).   Further details of PBs and percentage improvements are provided below.

Finally, runners who have been following Bananagate had the pleasure of witnessing part 1 of the happy ending to the saga at the end of the race.   For those who haven’t been following the story and can’t wait for  the film epic to be released, Carl and Mike had lost out on their fruit prizes, including a pineapple, in the previous 5K race in the series due to a youngster, running as a 60 year old under the pseudonum of a comic hero from the 1940s.  After much detective work involving another local running club, girlfriends, red faces, remorse and offers to cover the entry fee to future races, Carl and Mike were awarded their rightful prizes.  We look forward to part 2 of the happy ending, when Carl and Mike finally meet the youngster, but hopefully there won’t be any fruit surprises in store there.

Other races

Elsewhere, Simon Hazel was pleased with his performance in the London Triathlon last Saturday, finishing in  2:24:45 and three Heathsiders ran in the Regents Park 10k.  They were led home by Simon Brown (37:44) followed by Matthew Cockerill (38:29) who was the fasted V40.  He was followed not long after by Carl Heap (42:57), who was the second V60 and seemed  to have been using the race as a warm-up for the Battersea Park 5K.

Parkruns

Lots of Heathsiders were out in parkruns on Saturday, with wins by Tom Aldred ((15:56, Finsbury Park), Charles Hardy (17:26, Boston Park) and  Rebecca Bunting (18:44, Oakhill Park).  There was even a Heathside representive in Australia at the Bathurst parkrun, where former Heathside regular, Ursula Wilson showed good form to finish third  in 21:28.
