Plummer shines as youngsters rack up PBs at YDL

U13 Darnell Plummer qualifies for the National Champs in the 100m, Howard Gold makes his middle distance tri debut, Tom Aldred sets a new course record in the club handicap – all this and more in this week’s race report.

Apologies for the somewhat delayed delivery of this week’s results, but illness beset a newbie to the report rota so we had a short notice rejig. I’ll use that as a reason to keep this one fairly short, too.

Top billing should go to the fourth Youth Development League (YDL) fixture, at Parliament Hill on Sunday, where our young athletes put on an impressive performance. Russell Weston, head of young athletes, reports:

“Darnell Plummer stars for London Heathside young athletes with three PBs including a qualifying time for the National Championships in the 100m.

The fine weather and the fact that it was our home match combined to see the youngsters produce some great personal bests and debuts for the team.

Highlights included the Under 15 Boys long jump, where both Darnell (pictured below) and Henry (Damon) produced PBs in the first round, bettered it in the second round and then improved again to take first (Darnell 5.78m) and second (Henry 5.54m) overall.

Darnell had already set a PB in the 200m of 24.4 seconds and then ran a superb 100m of 11.7s to qualify for the national champs in Bedford in August (Qualifying time required of 11.8secs).

Similarly in the Under 15 Girls 800m Molly (Harrison) and Ottavia (Laidler) led from the gun and then ran away from the field in the second lap to take first and second.

In the Under 13s strong performances from some of our more experienced athletes such as Liam (Garrett) and Phoebe (Crockford) enabled some of our newer athletes to excel, with Ebube Egwuonwu (75M Hurdles and 200m), Caspar Schultz (Long Jump) and Lily McKay (Javelin) all making winning debuts.

In a close match where we were second at one stage we ended up 5th.

The other mass Heathside event was the excellent Club Handicap in Highgate Woods yesterday, won by Laura Boothman and Mike Abrahams, with Celine Murray and Olivier le Polain making the fastest female and male debuts. Elspeth Storrar was fastest woman overall, and Tom Aldred, who’s returning from injury, set a new course record in 15:46. Vet victories go to Miranda Yau and Declan Hamblin. Hats off to all those involved in organising and executing the event: Gabi, Dan, David, Steve and Barbara.

Otherwise we have impressive results from Heathsiders running in the 800m at the Watford Open last Wednesday (30 races in total in that distance!), with the Garrett times in particular catching my eye (V40 Edward and U13 Liam – related?); Steve Monaghan continues to chip away at his 10k time this season; and Rebecca Bunting ran a great Finsbury Park parkrun (first woman).
