Results round-up

Probably the best result for Heathsiders was that it was a sunny, warm and dry weekend for a change! A quiet week for racing, with a dearth of competitive events on the calendar, saw more Heathsiders running in Saturday morning Parkruns (36 in total) than in all other events combined. Two members took part in the AJ Bell London Triathlon, and three travelled up to God’s Own County, viz. Yorkshire, to run up hill and down dale in a two-day endurance event. And David Spencer proved that age is just a state of mind by winning his 100m event, in a time only 3 and-a-bit seconds slower than the 38 years younger Usain Bolt’s WR!

Where available, Chip Times and Chip positions are given.

Woodford Green Open Meeting (Tuesday 4th August)

David Spencer writes: “Warm evening, not bothered. A +4.2 wind blowing down the Woodford Green. 100 metres straight, that’s more like it - surely a straight route to a PB at 66 years of age! Clocking 13.87, a PB by 0.56 seconds - well, I’ve only ever run 3!”

Steve Woolf writes: “I did the sprint distance (750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run) but wasted time in the swim-bike transition as my timing chip had come off with my wetsuit, so I had to go back to put it on again! Other than that it was OK, my miserable lack of running training meant my 5K run was my slowest ever - but lots of people seemed to be struggling on the run even more than me, so I managed to pick up 105 places on the last section”

Berghaus Trail Chase™ (North York Moors National Park 8th-9th August)

Steve Armstrong writes: “Three Heathsiders (me, Sam Thompson and Rachel Newstead), plus Rachel's boyfriend Will, headed North for the two-day Berghaus Trail Chase across the North York Moors.  After 38 miles, and 2000m of climbing, Sam came in 3rd in the long race (after leading overnight – maybe the early effort got to him), Rachel 5th overall (2nd lady) and Steve 6th. Will was the winner of a slightly shorter alternative version of the route, and Sam & Steve took home the team prize, as “The Rainmen”.

The organisation of the event wasn't the greatest, and we all learnt that distance trail running shreds your feet and messes with your mind.  On both days Sam was seemingly too quick for the organisers, as the marshals were still laying out the course before he finished, leading to a big detour into a bracken bush on Day 1! But on the plus side we had glorious sunshine and beautiful scenery (ie. typical north-eastern conditions!), and showed that Southern Softies can mix it with the locals over tough terrain – and those locals will also be laughing about Sam's tan lines for many years to come!

PARKRUN: Apart from the usual London parks (with Finsbury Park continuing to attract the biggest LH attendance), members also took part in Parkruns in Hemel Hempstead, Coventry, and two separate events in Brighton (one, along the beach promenade and t’other in Preston Park). Special mention to Andrew Brooker and Rebecca Bunting - who not only posted the fastest LH times, and were 1st Male and Female in their respective runs, but both also achieved new PBs.
