Summertime and the livin' is easy

Its the height of summer so not surprisingly a very quiet racing weekend. The most exciting event without a doubt was the Finsbury Parkrun, where a massive 24 Heathsiders turned out to join the Boyles in their swansong run there before they (very sadly for us) depart for pastures new. Amongst the other racing highlights were the Last Friday of the month 5k,  the August Regent’s Park 10k (part of the Summer Series),  Self- Transcendence 5K, Watford Graded Open, the LICC,  a French duathlon, and a Floridian triathlon.

Regents Park 10K Summer series, 02/08/15

Five Heathsiders took part in this local and increasingly popular 10K held the first Sunday of the month through the summer April – September. There were 690 runners on Sunday and Allan Whatmough came in 10th place, and was the first Heathsider over the finish line in a terrific 36:58, closely followed by Mario Cadete who was pleased with his time of 38.26 (a PB).

Last Friday of the month, Serpentine 5K, 31/07/15

The last Friday of the month Serpentine 5k came round again, fiercely competitive as always, with strong performances from everyone. Ed was first Heathsider home comfortably inside 17 minutes with Kimon and Rebecca both achieving PBs and Rob equalling his.

Loggerhead sprint triathlon  (3/8 mile ocean swim, 13 mile bike and 5km run), Jupiter, Florida, 01/08/15

Julia Kelk and Tom Upchurch who many of you will remember, and who departed last year to live in Florida (where the sun shines every day, and Julia assures me it is way too hot to do any running) took part in a sprint triathlon on Saturday. This included a non-wetsuit sea swim. Both excelled with Tom coming 1st in age and Julia 3rd in age.

Alpe D’Huez duathlon, France, 29/07/15

John Driscoll was on holiday in Alpe D'Huez at the weekend, and decided when in France…. so he entered the local duathlon, which with some reservations, he seemed to enjoy ….. He wrote this short report: “A 6.5km switchback trail run consisting of a 15km bike leg up the hill and across town, and a 2.5km run at the top. For those thinking of doing it, be warned, it's not a flat course! The bike leg is 1,050m of climbing and they throw in nearly 350m of climbing (approx 5ish times up Swains Lane) over the run legs too. Best bit was setting off at the end knowing that I had half the usual 5km distance on the final run ! All in I came 126 out of 317 in 1:52:17, 10th out of 26 in age category which I was happy about as it was my first run in 4 weeks and I managed to beat my PB on the hour cycle up to Alpe D'Huez by a mighty 14 seconds”. Watford Open Graded Meeting, Watford, 29/07/15

Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, the Watford Open Graded meeting saw some quality running from a select group of Heathsiders – full results below. I am including a very blurry photo here which I am assured is of Jonathan Hopkins on the track at Watford, but it is a little hard to tell ....

Self-Transcendence 5k, Battersea Park, 3/08/15

Five Heathsiders turned up to the last of the summer Self-Transcendence 5Ks in Battersea park, with some excellent times, especially from Olivier  Le Polain who came in second place in 15.57.
