SAL/MYAL and Road Race Action

There was a vast range of distances and activities this weekend, with the MYAL and SAL taking up the bulk of the weekend for many. In the MYAL, the club hosted the Finsbury Park match and our enthusiastic young athletes rose to the challenge again with victories in all but one age group with 22 event wins. There were also some tremendous performances in the SAL. Rebecca Bunting breezed in first woman at the Hackney Half.

Southern Athletics League, Hemel Hempstead, 22nd May 2022

The Seniors opened their Track and Field Season with a solid 3rd place in Hemel Hempstead on Sunday. The League has reverted to it’s previous League Structure with matches on a round robin basis creating a much stiffer challenge than last season where the Club were in a group with two League 3 Clubs.

The Senior Men recorded x wins Cian O’Donnell (100m, Long Jump), Israel Nworgu (110mH), Jem O’Flaherty (5000m), James Hamblin (Shot, Hammer) and both 4x100m and 4x400m relays. James managed to set a new Club Hammer record throwing over 60m and winning the Man of the Match award.

The Senior Women’s team featured some debutants with U17W Hattie Munday winning the 800m and High Jump with Brogan Wallace winner of the 1500m both secured top 5 places in the Man of the Match .awards.

The team secured 148 pts just securing 3rd place by just 4 pts over Bedford and giving an indication of the challenges ahead this season.

Many thanks to Team Captains Mark and Jennifer for marshalling the troops. The next match will be the Home fixture at Finsbury Park against Ashford, Bexley and Royton AC.

Ridge Offroader 10K, Chilterns, 22nd May 2022

Emilia sent in this report: “I unexpectedly did a 10K on Sunday – the Ridge off-roader 10K in the Chilterns.  I’d entered the half marathon in 2020, but it got cancelled because of Covid and I forgot about it until I got the race instructions last Thursday, after which I happily switched to the 10k race.  It was a very well-organised event raising money for the local school in Bledlow Ridge.  The hills were particularly hard, given the warm weather, but the scenery was lovely, with the route going through wheat and other fields, meadows and woods, with a few styles to climb over too.  We were warned to stay away from the fences as some of them were electrically-charged.  Race survivors were rewarded with some great

post-race food (freshly-prepared burgers, hot dogs etc) and amazing locally-baked cakes.  In the end, my race time didn’t matter (I almost forgot to mention it!) but it was nice to finish in less than 60 minutes and to come second woman in the V40+ category.“
