Whippet Webster and Rocket Richard

Heathside’s senior women team put on a classy performance to finish 16th out of 53 teams in the high standard Southern road relays this weekend, while an unstoppable Richard Macaulay left his previous 1500m PB in the dust in a mid-week Watford outing.

Sarah Swinhoe, Katy Webster, Clare Miller and Claire Morrissey mixed it up with some of the finest athletes in the South East (Steph Twell, Emelia Gorecka) on Saturday at the SEAA 4 Stage Relays, putting in a very good performance in what is a high standard competition to make up for low attendance from Heathside at the event.

I hand you over to the ladies’ own account of the day below, wrestling references and all included. Before that there is another fantastic result to report, however, this time from a Wednesday night Watford outing for the extremely hard-working Richard Macaulay, who slashed his 1500m PB by nearly five seconds, bringing it down to 4:16.66.

A trawl of Power of 10 reveals that there was plenty of road racing to be had in the local-ish area this weekend, but it seems that Heathsiders were keeping a fairly low profile, after having stuck Gavin with a massive race report last weekend. However, besides the assorted parkruns we had a few Heathsiders running quarter, half, and full marathons. And on Sunday Heathside hosted its inaugural 600m Challenge as part of a QuadKids + Club BBQ combo – the middle and long distance runners have some catching up to do if they want to claim the Challenge title for their side next year. A big thank you to everyone who helped out on the day, and especially on the BBQ to Marilyn and her team of helpers, Norbert, Agi et al. and to Rachel and all her Quadkids officials team, who ensured that all the young athletes had a great event and were well fed after.

This from our ladies on their day out at the SEAA relays:

“While Sarah, Clare & Claire were relieved to make it to Aldershot after a few tussles with the SatNav, Katy "Whippet" Webster got the team off to a flying start with a 13:30 lap and a 9th place finish in the first leg. Miller who had bravely left her sick bed to take up her place on the team and after having been greatly entertained by Big Show en route to Aldershot, pulled out a speedy 14:28 second leg. Morrissey dug deep over the undulating course to hand the baton over to team captain Sarah who brought the team home in 16th of 53 teams.”

Post-publication update
Chris Burn and Lou Atkin were in the Peak District this weekend, Lou almost officially running as Heathside after having sent off her membership form last week, and raced the Stanage Struggle, which starts in the village of Hathersage, goes straight up to Stanage edge, along the top for a few kms and then straight back down again. Amounting to 9.9km and 255m of ascent makes it "really short and fast", according to Chris, who says it's a well-run, good 'local' fell race. A hard earned finishing time of 44m32s had him a bit disappointed, but he sounds like he will rightly take encouragement from his finishing position - 12th out of 324 runners. It was Lou's first fell race, and she finished in 55min26s, as 12th woman.
