17 Heathsiders under 3-hours in London Marathon
This week’s big report is, of course, on the London Marathon. The Heathside winners’ trophies went to James Hurrell who ran a PB of 2:28:42 and Sarah Swinhoe, who, in her 53rd year, ran a time of 2:55:23, the second fastest V50 marathon in the UK this year. There were also several PBs among our U15s in the WG&EL Open Graded Meeting in Woodford on Saturday while at the Sri Chimnoy 10 in Battersea Park Ed Samuels returned to form after a long injury-induced layoff to finish in 35.34, Martin Potter broke the club V55 record in 36:09, making him the second V55, and Jackie Wastell was the second V60 in 48:08. Meanwhile in the 5k at Battersea on Friday Tom Aldred broke the club V40 record in 15:18 and Thomas Archer ran 8:45 n the 3000 in Loughborough on Saturday. And, late news, Filippo Minelle ran 2:46:30 in his debut marathon in Padova, Italy.
London Marathon, Sunday April 23
This year’s London Marathon was run under near-perfect conditions, with cloud cover and a gentle drizzle. It saw 17 of our 41 finishers (among the 48,000-plus) going under three hours, nine going under 2:50, five going under 2:40 and two going under 2:30.
James Hurrell ran a PB of 2:28:42 and was followed by Kieran Morris who ran a five-minute PB of 2:29:42, both men timing it perfectly, with evenly paced marathons. Third was George Gurney who was the first Heathsider at the halfway mark in 1:13:33 and finished in 2:33:04. Dan Collins was our first veteran, finishing in 2:38:35, followed by V45 Roger Maidment in 2:39:28. Jose Sabroso was delighted with his PB of 2:42:34, Graham Wilkinson came back from injury to run a PB of 2:42:37 and our first V50 was Ed Boden in a PB of 2:44:47, followed by Thomas Foy in a PB of 2:47:17.
Sarah Swinhoe went through the half in 1:26 12 and then broke the club V50 record by something like 50 minutes to romp home in 2:55:23. She also raised nearly £7K for the Institute of Cancer Research. Our second woman was Chiara Borg in a PB of 3:02:08, closely followed by Miuki Okubi in a PB of 3:02:15. Next was V40 Emily Reichert in a five-minute-plus PB of 3:04:04 and Katie Brown in a PB of 3:04:27.
There were several other notable performances. V40 Liam Hazelton went under the three hour mark for the first time, clocking 2:57:55. V55 Rob Shulman returned to sub-3 form, finishing in 2:57:10, having gone through the halfway mark in 1:28:46, meaning he did negative splits. Valentin Valeanu ran 3:08:51 a week after running the Rotterdam Marathon. Dominic Jackson, at the age of 59, ran 3:01:59 – and was inside sub-3 pace until the last three miles.
Then there were plans that went badly awry. Jamie Morris, coming back from an Achilles injury, and Gavin Evans, whose legs are very old, both went out in vintage 2:50-ish pace and paid the price, Jamie finishing 26 minutes slower than last year and Gavin finishing 25 minutes slower than in 2019. But at least they were able to coax each other to the finishing line.

Sri Chinmoy Battersea Park 10K – Saturday April 22
Martin Potter reports:
The day before the main event saw a hardy band of Heathsiders run the ever-popular Sri Chinmoy Battersea Park 10km. Near perfect conditions and some keen competition meant for some great times. Ed Samuels was first home as he honed his running ahead of his Spring marathon in a couple of week’s time. Next home was a happy Martin Potter who beat the long standing V55 record to finish in just over 36 minutes. The ever-improving Pep Pamies finished well within the 40 minutes, closely followed by Matt Beard. Leo Pemberton seems to have overcome his recent illnesses to finish just over the 40 minute threshold. Jackie Wastell was also chuffed to finish well ahead of her recent 10km times to post her fastest time for a number of years.
