South of England Cross Country Championships, Beckenham Palace Park, January 27

On a perfect day in Beckenham 65 of our runners took part in the ‘Southerns’. Perhaps the best performance was Rebecca Bunting’s 16th place in the 8k women’s event, in which our team came sixth. With Seyfu away our first man was Kader Seyed in 29th place. The men’s event was advertised as 15km but was in fact 13.6km (8.5miles). Our highest scoring junior was Amy Kirk who came 20th in the U15 Girls event.

Plenty of Young Heathsiders trekked to South London for the South of England Championships in perfect weather for racing.  The issues that bugged the first races now appeared to have been sorted and the course offered a good challenge combined with the big fields of runners.    The outstanding performance was by our U15 Girls who with Amy Kirk  finishing 20th and Kiara Corkin, Rosa Cormacain and Margot Hunt all having top 50 finishes just missed out on a team medal finishing 4th.  The U17 Women also produced     an excellent performance finishing 9th  with Millie Watkins our first home in 47th.  The U13 Boys were 11th with Rory Willis finishing an excellent 29th.  Sam Turner’s 38th place anchored the U15 Boys who finished 14th.

British Masters Athletic Federation National Pentathlon Championships, Institute of Sport, Sheffield, Sunday January 28

Adrian Essex picked up yet another multi-even age group gold medal here – the first V70 athlete with 2397 points. He wrote:

‘I had an enjoyable day at the BMAF pentathlon championships yesterday and despite a slightly subpar performance came away with a gold medal . I would recommend these championships to anyone looking to practise a wider range of skills than just running .

I'd also recommend the British Championships at Lee Valley on February the 17 and 18th. The closing date is 7th February.’

Chingford League, Epping Forest, January 20

Caroline White reports that ten brave Heathsiders headed east on a bitterly cold Saturday morning to take part in a 5 mile xc race in Epping Forest – part of the Chingford League. With ground frozen solid, killer hills, rough ground and rutted mud it was a tough choice between trail shoes or spikes – neither were perfect for everything. Despite the biting cold and wind it was a great race and the views were terrific. Andy Barnes was our first man home in 10th place and Francesca Stocco was our first woman home.
