Beckford and Naylor bring home county golds
This weekend’s Middlesex track & field champs turned out to be quite a successful outing for many of our young athletes, with Lily and Johnny bringing home gold in the 300m and 1500m, respectively, and others adding to the medal count. A trip to the continent for a Belgium-Holland cross border marathon paid off with massive PBs for Claire and Jo, and a rather large trophy for Ursula!
The Maas Marathon-de-la-Meuse was a replacement marathon for Gabi, too, remember, after she abandoned plans to run Milton Keynes given the abysmal weather at the time. Unfortunately for her she wasn’t feeling 100% so took it easy this time, but Jo and Claire booked massive PBs and Ursula got a big trophy for coming in 1st FV40. Gabi describes the race as a very friendly, low key and picturesque cross-border race from Vise, Belgium, to Maastricht, Holland and back along the River Meuse. There were very few women in the race, and many spectators/runners were amazed that the Heathside ladies had come from London, and couldn't believe that Ursula had just run London, too, which must have been mentioned when she went on stage to get her trophy.
Our Heathside ladies could very well be featured in the local papers there, so if anyone wants to have a search (google.nl or google.be ?) let us know if you find anything!
Otherwise there were some new parkruns being added to the Heathside list this weekend, Tom Stephenson took 6th place at the Deal half marathon, and Costi ran a PB in a 10k in St Albans. The county champs attracted a good crowd of our young athletes, with some impressive performances among them. Lily and Johnny stand out for winning well contended 300m and 1500m races in their age category, but there were plenty of other good runs, for example, from Max, Lauren and James, and many many PBs. These are based on power of 10 and may in a few instances reflect debut performances, but I know a few of them, like Miron's, are "proper" PBs. I'm not sure how medals are awarded for the events across different age categories, but by my count our young athletes made it into the top three on 10 occasions in total. Super and rock on, I’d say.
