Southern Athletics League:- Division 2 East, Finsbury Park, Saturday June 12
Simon Baker reports: “The SAL returned to Finsbury Park on Saturday with the club hosting Ashford, Bexley and Ryston. After a slightly disappointing 1st match, this saw the Club secure a victory and a well deserved 4 points.
The men’s team almost produced a clean sweep of the track winning all the races and 2nd places in the 3000m and 300m Steeplechase. Event wins went to Cian O'Donnell (100m,200m), Vladimir Woodham Smith (400m), Joseph Cochrane (800m), Thomas Archer (1500m), Israel Nworgu (100n H, 400mH), Carlos Mingoes (Long Jump), James Hamblin (Shot, Hammer), Noelle O'Regan (400m) Hattie Munday (800m), Izzy Watkins (1500m), Annie Arnold (5000m), Rose Garrett (1500m). In addition Cian and Hattie were also nominated for man and woman of the match. Special mention too for Jacob Howe who took part in the Long Jump and Fabio took on the 3000m Steeple Chase. Notable too was a Masters 200m with the first 2 almost unseperable on the line.
A great effort by all to everyone helping and officiating the meeting. with Rachel and Helena providing a seamless photo finish.”

Rebecca said the race involved ‘a lot of ascent (6,000 feet) on a coastal, wooded and rocky route with outstanding views’. A day after she said she was ‘still feeling exhilarated’ and that it was ‘great to be back on trail’.

Man vs Horse race, Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales, Saturday June 12
Harry Kleiman was part of a winning relay team in the 41st man vs horse race in Wales, with his team completing the 20.42 mile uphill event in 2:26:50. Here’s his report:
I did Man vs Horse in Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales on Saturday 11 June. It took us about six hours to get to and it’s the Britain’s smallest town. It still has about three pubs though. It was the 41st man vs horse event and it’s a 20.42 mile race against horses with over 4000ft of ascent. I did the relay event which was the same course split up into roughly three.
I did the first leg through the Welsh hills, which were much steeper than expected and I couldn’t find anywhere near Finsbury Park to train for them! Me and our third leg runner ran too fast so didn’t actually see any horses when we were running.
We won the relay race in a time of 2:26:50. Only three horses beat us, with the quickest one by 90 seconds. I will definitely be going back for the full 20.42 miles next year.
Dorney Sprint Triathlon, Sunday June 12
Jackie Wastell was the first V60 and 13th woman in this event in a time of 1:24:02 and Martin Potter was the second V50 and 12th overall in a time of 1:11.05. Here’s Martin’s report:
The Wastell-Potter household completed the Dorney Sprint Triathlon on Sunday. In warm but breezy conditions both were pleased with solid performances for the first triathlon of the year (and maybe the last). Jackie was disappointed not to beat Martin on the bike but was rewarded with the fastest female bike time of the day.

British Triathlon Championships, Leeds, Sunday June 12
Matt Collins competed in this event, finishing in a time of 2:33. Here’s his report:
I competed at the British Championships in Leeds on Sunday. A great event as part of the World Triathlon Series weekend. I came 349th out of 1174 and 43rd in my age category on a hilly course in a total time of 2 hours 33 minutes. I still marvel at how quickly some can go on the bike. In contrast it’s fun overtaking lots of people on the run, so the Heathside track training is put to good use.
Parkruns
A total of 62 Heathsiders took part in 18 Parkruns on Saturday. Our only winner was Olivia Desborough in Highbury Fields, in a time of 18:44. The full Heathside results are here .
Report by Gavin Evans, with thanks to Simon Baker, Rebecca Bunting, Harry Kleiman, Matt Collins, and Martin Potter.
