Heathside does the county champs & a whole lot more
Nine gold, seven silver, five bronze: thus the medal haul from this weekend’s county track & field champs, where Lily Beckford’s storming 55.43s 400m was the highlight. And then there are triathlons, duathlons, and plain ol' running to report on. Here goes ...
From a club perspective the main event on the competition calendar this weekend was the Middlesex Track & Field Champs at Lee Valley, where 30 Heathsiders across nearly all age groups were in action – only representatives from the U13 Girls were missing. By my count we came home with 21 medals, nine of which belong to this year’s Middlesex Champions: Chris Hartley (5000m, senior men), Israel Nworgu (110m Hurdles, senior men), Sue Rust (1500m, senior women), Izaiah Turner (Shot Put and Discus, U20 Men), Lily Beckford (400m, U20 Women but also overall winner), Henry Damon (Long Jump, U17 Men), Peter Onuba (Shot Put, U15 Boys), and Rocco Lofinmakin-dutta (High Jump, U13 Boys). The highlight was Lily’s 400m, which was another PB and club record, and ranks her 7th in the country for U20 women in the event and 38th overall. Remember the name folks, remember the name.
And then we have our seven silver and a handful of bronze medallists, which in many cases were earned with PB performances that bode well given it’s still early in the season. Next track & field competition opportunities: Part I of the club champs this Tuesday, 3 June, at Finsbury Park, and the third SAL, on Saturday, 21 June. Come along!
Away from the two-day Middlesex Champs we have multi-sporting results and plain ol’ road running race results, from the mile in Westminster and the marathon in Edinburgh, with plenty in between. Oh, and Clare Miller and Dave Hellard were in Austria running up a ski jump (pictured) … I refer you to this: http://www.inov-8ocr.com/#!news/c1q0u
The Edinburgh marathon results are a bit weird as the organisers are not making them available to the public apparently, but we know that Ed Samuel and Paul Jarman took part, as well as a few other Heathsiders. We’ll have to keep an eye out for those results, but below are provisional ones for Ed and Paul, and a few words from Ed:
“The day itself started with some light rain that thankfully stopped just as we started, but returned towards the tail end of the race to soak the unfortunate runners still on the course. We had wind in our faces from miles 5-6 once we hit the coast road, that remained until we turned at around mile 17, where we then enjoyed the tailwind all the way to the finish.”
And Caroline with a mini-report on the Westminster mile:
“At the 60th anniversary of Roger Bannister breaking the 4 min mile, around 5,800 runners had a go at running the same distance running along the mall in the second year of The Westminster Mile. Mo Farah pulled out, but Roger was there and 8 Heathsiders also joined in the fun. Tony Killilea was 3rd M50, Jim Taggart 3rd V65, Caroline 4th V55 (and Briony Fane who did the race as a speed walk, finished in 9.41 and 31st V55). Great day, very well organised (apart from whoever planned the weather!? – it poured) with massive goody bag for all.”
Andrew Prystawsky recommends the Ilkley Trail 10k, which he squeezed in a day after his stag do, which was spent walking, embarking in Yorkshire Olympics, steam trains and plenty of ale. The Brownlee brothers came by on their bikes on a training ride to watch the race unfold and a race day entry fee of £10 even got competitors a T-shirt. In other words: “What's not to love about the north?! Highly recommend this one if you're ever in the area on the last bank holiday of May, especially if you like a fell or eight.”
A small group of Heathsiders took part in the Velopark Duathlon on Sunday, with Dan designating Agi hero of the day: second lady, with the fastest ladies’ lap time on the bike. And a bit of extra colour from the man with a way with a narrative: “She then fell off said bike on the way to the pub afterwards. Both Agi and bike are reported to be unharmed.” Claire was third lady – check out the podium pic: http://www.veloparkduathlon.com/#!DSC_0131JPG/zoom/c19et/imageqo8
A week after doing the Ironman Lanzarote, Julia Kelk ran the Sierra Leone Marathon in support of Street Child. She says: “It took place in Makeni in Sierra Leone and was a very hilly off-road rural race in absolutely blistering heat and humidity – the hottest day they had seen in ages, apparently. We ran through the jungle through various rural villages and the children in the villages often ran alongside us. I finished it in 4:00:30 and was 1st International Woman and 3rd Woman overall. The winning International Man, who had done 2:56 in Manchester in April, finished in 3:45, so that gives you an idea of how tough it was!”
