St Albans half win for Katy

Highlights for this week’s race report include Katy placing first woman in the St Albans Half in a new PB, a decent turnout at the track & field fixtures with some vital support from our U17 ladies in the SAL Parliament Hill match, and belated news from the Comrades Marathon in South Africa and the Stockholm Marathon.

Katy looks to have knocked a big chunk off her half marathon PB in the St Albans Half Marathon, despite what I hear was a wrong turn at some point, to finish 15th overall and claim first prize for the women’s race. While there were at least eight other Heathsiders in the same race Steve may have been the only one running the Southend Half Marathon, where he finished fifth and first V40.

Both of our track & field teams were competing this weekend, the SAL team at Parliament Hill and the SML team at Braintree. We had a decent turnout in the end at the SAL fixture, but it was a far cry from that of Thames Valley Harriers and High Wycombe and we ended up tied with Highgate in last position. A strong head-wind on the home straight made for some frustrating running, in particular for the sprinters but affecting everyone that couldn’t hide behind a human windshield. From the women’s team perspective it was a pleasure to have some of our young athletes on board to lend a helping hand and score some vital points, with Angelica, Lily, Yanna and Xelia acquitting themselves very well, and Lily and Xelia taking home PBs. In the SML Adrian reports of another fine team effort, especially Richard's 800m PB and Jake's win in the triple jump. All events were covered except the hurdles, with everyone competing in between two and seven events. We might have come a place higher but for Billy's being barged into the kerb in the 1500 metres. The Stockholm and Comrades marathons are now nearly two weeks ago, but Simon Clarkson got in touch to share his experience of the former, where he managed a new PB in what was his 12th marathon but amid shocking weather conditions: temperature of 3-4 degrees combined with unrelenting driving rain, resulting in a wind chill of –7. The winning time was 3:19, five minutes slower than in 2011, and of 15,968 starters only 14,686 actually finished. Not only was Simon among the batch of finishers, but he also managed to run an even split and pass 1,590 people in the second half to be placed in the top 25% at position 3,820 after a sprint finish. Contrast that with the Comrades marathon, where Mike Stocks (pictured in the screen grab of a video from the race)  ran 56 miles in just over 7 hours in the heat of South Africa.
