Young Athletes storm to victory and the Bishop's Stortford road race that wasn't!

The weekend was dominated by the 4th  fixture in the Rob Jackson road race champs, the Bishop’s Stortford 10 mile race which was a brand new addition to the champs this year. I feel I should apologise to those runners who turned up rightly expecting a race in the road race champs to be on a surface which would at least resemble … road. I suppose the only excuse for misinformation is that for many years this was a road race (Jacob Howe and Caroline White, having run it pre 2005 would testify to this fact…). So the dozen or so Heathsiders who started the race were more than surprised to hit deep mud within the first mile, followed by all manner of bumpy surfaces including rough farm tracks and long grass. But I am sure they nevertheless enjoyed their frolic in the countryside and we did return home with not only muddy legs and suntans, but also the ladies’ team prize and an individual prize for Gavin. A great morning’s work by all as this was indeed a tough course, described as ‘Orion light’ by those in the know. (Orion 15 being the toughest cross country race in the UK…).

The next race in the champs is our own Midsummer 10k on Sunday on the heath extension  - if you are not running and can help out please let Briony know as we are desperately short of marshals. (brionyfane@gmail.com)

Young Athlete’s League, Mile End 16/6/12

We had the best day weather- wise we have had this year for a Young Athletes fixture and the competition was fierce all day with four different clubs leading at some point.

With approximately 10 events to go we were equal 3rd but only 14 points behind Highgate who led.

We would like to congratulate all the athletes on their exceptional team spirit during this event. Impressively the relay teams made it round without disqualification, and several people competed in events new to them, with the result that the team moved up to take victory on the day. Well done!

We finish equal top of the league on league points but will probably finish second on match points (unfortunately the point we lost in the last match for not having officials has prevented us being champions.)

On this note we must thank everyone who helped out especially Peter Snell and Rob Summerson who were are track officials and Emmanuel, Jacob and Jordan who turned up to be field officials.

MATCH RESULT

The outstanding individual run of the day was once again by Joseph Galea, who achieved not only grade 3 result in the last match, this time he did one better and achieved a Grade 2 time.

Under 17Men 100m Joseph Galea 11.3 (also competing in the 200m and the long jump)

We had two Grade 4 runs and these were especially noteworthy as both individuals ran on their own as there were no other competitors.

Under 17 Women 80m Hurdles 1st Djanira Costa 13.0s

Under 15 Boys 80m Hurdles 1st Jahii Laudat 13.2s

Djinira was making her debut for the club and also won the 100m and the Javelin.

The under 15 girls and under 13 boys 4 x 100m relay teams both came second.

The day was summed up by the under 15 boys 4 x 100m relay team of Isayah Boers, Jahii Laudat, Joshua Apple and Emmanuel Adedeji winning by about 40metres in a very impressive time of 50.6. (Watch out seniors!)
