Running up a Storm
Two Club Records, impressive endurance racing and Zac’s Covid-19 Meeting at the Finsbury Park Track all feature this week as athletic activity of all sorts slowly starts to return.
The Stour Valley Path is a 100km (62 mile) long footpath in England, which starts in Newmarket (Suffolk) and ends in Cattawade, a village near Manningtree (Essex). The SVP100 endurance race covers almost the entire length of the well marked trail, and is one of the UK’s longest point to point races it offers both 50km and 100km races. There were 9 Heathsiders who made the journey into deepest East Anglia to take part. Staggered starting times ensured participants were Covid-19 safe.Rob Shulman was 16th in the 100km race with Michael Cockings 32nd. Steve Armstrong was the first Heathsider in the 50Km finishing 15th with Alex Sweet, Matthew Cockerill, Tony Shearer and Damien Lane all in the top 30. Tatyana Potiyenko finished in 39th and was the 9th woman home. Brilliant running by all.
At the second LICC meeting, held at Lee Valley over both days of the weekend, Mia Rosen retook the No.1 U13G 800m ranking spot with her first outdoor race over the distance bettering Issy Watkin’s previous club record by 10 sec. Sam Ingram produced an outdoor PB in the Pole Vault only 3cm below his best ever jump. Noelle O’Regan produced the joint fastest 200m by a Heathsider this year, Jenifer Wing, Mary Kehoe and Tony Killilea also produced good performances considering the lack of competitive practice.
Zac held an informal evening of track racing at the Finsbury Park Track on Monday with races over 400m, 1,500m and 3,000m. His innovative structure allows for heats and finals to be held the same evening. Lots of great performances and a new U13B 400m record for Benjy Bediako breaking the previous 11 year old mark previously set by Leon Cannon-Wilson.
