A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. While most folk were on the sofa, drinking red wine out the bottle and watching their new Only Fools and Horses DVD box set, some of you were out running, you wonderful human beings, you.
Read MoreThere was a massive Heathside turn out on Saturday afternoon for the last Met league of 2012, not surprisingly really, as, happily for us, it was based right on our doorstep. Whether fired up by all that pre-Christmas alcohol or the slightly warmer weather had defrosted everyone, or maybe the knee-deep mud was an extra challenge – whatever the reason, we had over 100 Heathsiders taking part, and we had many terrific performances on a very tough course. As Chris has written a full and frank super-enthusiastic race report I won't steal his thunder or bore you with duplicating any of it- read the full uncensored version below!
Read More11 Heathsiders ran the first Sunday League to be held at St Albans. Next Sunday League race is at Royston on 13th Jan – starting 10.30am.
Read MoreThe main event of the weekend was the SEAA Masters and Inter-Counties Championships at Claybury, where the weather was perfect for cross-country but apparently the course was a bit of a mule, with people falling over all over the place.
Read MoreFive of our runners deserve special praise for their performances at the first weekend of December. Sue Rust had no trouble winning the women’s race at the Sorority Cup at Trent Park on Saturday and, among the men, Dan McKeown had an impressive ninth place in the Fraternity Cup. On the same day at the same park, Rachel Seckl came second (U17) and Lucy Carter third (U15) in the North West London Young Athletes League. Meanwhile Leigh James was the women’s winner at the Perivale 5 miler on Sunday, winning by half a minute and Dan Madams was the fourth man, despite having to stop to pick up the keys he’d dropped along the way.
Read MoreThe course was rather tougher than I had anticipated! It was very waterlogged at the bottom end where the lake was overflowing, and even at the top end it was a bit muddy as well. There was an odd zig-zag section across an open section, and one part when you emerged from some cover onto open grassland and were blown backwards by the wind. I had the odd complaint that the course was not as flat as I had suggested, and everyone's shoes were filthy by the end!!! At least it was a sunny morning, if a little chilly and windy.
Read MoreOur young athletes underlined that they are a force to be reckoned with this cross-country season with two top team placings and three individual podium finishes, including a win for Johnny, at a North West London YA fixture in Harrow on Saturday, while some of our seniors found some mud to play in, too. Not Tony though - he ran in the sun in India.
Read MoreSaturday saw a strong showing from the club at the London Youth Games and the London Cross country championships held on the muddy slopes of Parliament Hill. Our young athletes had another good day, and there were some good individual performances from our seniors, despite a disappointing lack of team medals. This was another great day for our young athletes who were competing against athletes from all 33 boroughs in the London Youth Games Cross Country Races, Parliament Hill.
Read MoreWith a good number of our members splashing through the mud at the London Cross Country championships on the Heath on Saturday (report to follow), it was a quiet weekend elsewhere for our road runners. However what we lacked in quantity was certainly made up for in quality with some well earned PBs at distances from 10k to marathon. Rob Shulman had a great run at the Luton marathon, finishing in 2hr54min which was his first PB at that distance for two and a half years, while Phil Wright ran his debut marathon in Turin in 3 hr 18min - well done to both! In Gosport, Dan Madams impressively ran the half marathon in 74min43sec, a PB for him by over 2 minutes and Anthony Hall also had a great run to get a PB at St Neots (answers on a post card if you know where that is!) with a finishing time of 78min42sec. Angela Howe was first woman at the Fraserburgh half, finishing in 86mins, particularly impressive as she apparently had to stop to avoid a rearing horse en route.
Read MoreThe North West London Young Athletes first fixture of the season on Saturday was a chance for Heathside's youngsters to shine at Horsenden Hill. Despite the wintery weather with a cold wind lashing across the venue, there was a good turnout with plenty of strong performances. Over 280 young athletes from 10 different clubs competed on Saturday, a very high turnout reflecting the 'Olympic' effect. Indeed the Under 11s girls' race had its largest ever entry, with 48 finishers!
